I was listening to Clay and Buck on the way to pick up some cigars and lunch and they had Cruz on as a guest and he said some dumb things and that’s not like him. I don’t always agree with him but he is extremely smart and a constitutional scholar and so clearly he was doing it for effect. He was discussing the importance of election Herschel Walker in Georgia and how a 50-50 split is so much better than a 51-49.
He started off with the possibility that the Dems would end the filibuster and then they could enact all their anti-democratic agenda. Federalizing all elections and adding DC and Puerto Rico as states to get four more Dem senators and packing the Supreme Court.
First, they could in fact end the filibuster and I’ll explain why that would be an incredibly stupid decision but that doesn’t mean that they won’t do it. However that’s the only thing that the senate could do on its own. All the other bs would have to be passed by a Republican house and that ain’t going to happen. I am sure that Cruz was trying to scare people to get out the vote for Walker. If that’s not the case then Ted just dropped precipitously in my view.
Now here’s why I don’t think the Dems would be stupid enough to abolish the filibuster. As I just pointed out, with a Republican house it would be a meaningless gesture because they still couldn’t get anything done without house Republican support and for their bs that won’t be happening. On the other hand, if they did it it could come back to bite them in the ass in 2024. The Dems have way more vulnerable seats up than the republicans did this year including Manchin who is toast! So why would any rational party do something that won’t help them and is a likely disaster for them after the next election? The only reason I can think is that they are Dems and therefore stupid.
