One of you asked me earlier if I was going to rant about the BBB and I said maybe but I thought most everything that could be said has been said and I don’t want to regurgitate what’s available to anyone on the internet. And then I changed my mind and said yes because I have a couple of points I want to make.
First I want to comment on a point I have previously discussed. Trump 2.0 is much better for having the Magoo disaster between his terms. It gave him the chance to evaluate the lessons learned from his first term. This time he knew the swamp and he surrounded himself with actual people who were dedicated to his agenda and he supported them so they know they can decimate the Dems in hearings because they know that he has their backs and they have his.
He now knows how DC works and can play hardball. If you’re a Republican, the last thing you want is for Trump to call you out for being against his mandate.
Now the second thing that I want to comment on is the Senate Parliamentarian. I’m pretty sure that you have heard about her blocking several cost cutting provisions from the BBB. I’ve seen that she blocked $500 billion in savings.
So how does this happen? First what is the parliamentarian? It is a position that usually decides various parliamentary issues concerning Senate rules. Most of you are probably aware of Roberts Rules of Order. The senate rules are much more complicated. So the parliamentarian is there to sort out these issues.
Now the reason that I am dealing with this position because of something called the Byrd rule, , named after the Grand Cyclops of the KKK which pertains to reconciliation bills. So that a filibuster can’t stop a budget bill from passing, the rule allows budget bills to pass the Senate on a simple majority. And if I remember correctly, only two reconciliation bills can be passed in one year. Which is why Trump wanted one BBB so they can still do another reconciliation bill this year. If you remember several republicans wanted to break down the BBB into two separate bills. Trump wanted just one so that he could get everything done and not have to wait on a second bill to accomplish what he had promised to us.
The reason I bring this up is because the Parliamentarian blocked several important provisions saying they weren’t budget related. I don’t know how something cutting government spending isn’t budget related. So here’s the issue. The parliamentarian is appointed by the Senate majority leader and serves at his pleasure. The present occupant of that office was appointed by Harry Reid so you can imagine just how apolitical she is. Many wanted Senator Thune to repeal the rule that requires the senate to abide by her decisions on what’s in and out of a reconciliation bill. And I commend him for not doing that because as I’ve said before, be careful it doesn’t come back to bite you in the ass in the future. No what I want is for Thune to fire the present person and replace her with a neutral person before the next reconciliation bill comes up. I wouldn’t mind a right leaning individual to counteract the leftist there now. I guarantee you that if the BBB was a democrat initiative, she would not have cut anything out.
